Lake Varnis

The Eternal Lake and the Spire of Mourning

Among the open plains of the Aerthas Dominion, Lake Varnis lies like a dark wound carved into the land. Its uneven shoreline, shaped by centuries of silent erosion, curls around a vast, still body of water where reflections never show the sky—only shadow.

A thin mist clings often to its surface, rising without wind or rain. It appears suddenly, as if the lake itself were breathing. No birds sing near its shores. No insects hum. Only the muffled sound of one’s own steps follows those who approach… and, at times, the unsettling sense of being watched.

At the center of the lake stands The Spire of Mourning — a tall, black, solitary tower.
It has no windows. No visible entrances. No adornment.
It is older than maps, older than kingdoms.
No record tells who built it, or when.
The material it’s made from is unknown — matte, cold to the touch, and reflecting light in unnatural ways.
Scholars from across Aerthas have studied it for generations. None have made progress.
If the Spire has a door, it has never opened.

Those who venture too close often speak of an unbearable tension in the air — a feeling that they are never truly alone.
There is a presence, they say, just out of sight. A quiet weight behind them, as if something stands just over their shoulder, unmoving, watching.

No one ever turns to look.
Not out of discipline — but fear.
A fear so deep it roots the spine and seals the throat.

Some leave the lake in silence, pale and distant, as if something of them was left behind in the mist.
Others do not leave at all.

To the local people, the Spire is not a mystery to solve. It is a presence to respect, or to fear.
By night, its name is not spoken aloud.
And when the mist rises from the lake, doors are shut, and lights are dimmed.
